The Culture and Stigma of Suicide
We now live in a cultural moment in which it seems safe for so many to be upfront about their mental health diagnoses, even Firefighters. This is unquestionably a good thing, but the flip side of reducing stigma by going public with one’s struggles is respecting others who choose not to do so. So many Firefighters choose not to share their mental health challenges and that is their choice and their right. Steve and Dr. Chuck discuss suicide, the stigma in the fire service and how Psychologists use faith and the belief system to help intervene when someone is struggling and may not want to admit they have a mental health illness.
