On March 18–19, 2026, leaders from the Fire Service Psychology Association (FSPA) gathered in Washington, D.C. to participate in the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s (CFSI) Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Symposium and Dinner—one of the most important events of the year for fire service advocacy and policy engagement.
The symposium brings together fire service professionals, researchers, policymakers, and congressional leaders to discuss critical issues affecting fire prevention, emergency response, and public safety across the nation. This year’s event provided an essential forum for meaningful dialogue on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of fire and emergency services.
Representing FSPA at the symposium were (left to right) Dr. Anne Bisek, Dr. Burt Clark, Robert Avsec, Dr. Shelby Moreira, and Dr. Kadie Lombardo. Each member of the delegation brought a unique perspective grounded in research, policy, and practical experience, reinforcing FSPA’s commitment to advancing evidence-based solutions that protect communities and support the fire service.
Throughout the two-day event, the FSPA delegation engaged in discussions with fellow stakeholders on mental and behavioral issues affecting the firefighters and officers. Those conversations centered around the FSPA tagline, Building a bridge between professional psychology and the fire service, and FSPA’s desire to collaborate with fire service leaders and organizations in attendance in building that bridge.
The annual CFSI Dinner, a hallmark of the symposium, underscored the importance of collaboration between the fire service community and elected officials in shaping legislation that enhances safety and resilience nationwide.
We had the pleasure ofhaving Ms. Conwell Smith, APA’s Deputy Chief for Military and Veteran Policy, and Ben Vonachen, Senior Director, Congressional and Federal Relations at APA, join us as our guests at the dinner. This was a fantastic opportunity to continue building a working relationship between FSPA and APA!
FSPA’s presence at the 2026 symposium reflects its ongoing dedication to advocacy, education, and partnership at the national level. By participating in conversations that influence public policy, FSPA continues to ensure that fire protection science and real-world experience inform decisions made on Capitol Hill.
As the fire and emergency services landscape evolves, FSPA’s participation at events like the CFSI Symposium and Dinner remain vital. FSPA is proud to stand alongside leaders and innovators who are working collectively to strengthen programs and services to improve the mental and behavioral of firefighters and officers.
