9th Annual Conference of the Fire Service Psychology Association October 15–16, 2026 | Portland, Oregon

The Fire Service Psychology Association is accepting proposals for presentations that advance the science and the field of fire psychology. This year’s conference will focus on innovative research, practical applications, and strategies that strengthen firefighter mental health, decision-making, and organizational resilience.

Conference Theme: Optimizing Firefighter Readiness

FSPA is delighted to have the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office as our host organization for the FSPA Conference in Portland in October 2026.

Deadline for Proposals: April 28th, 2026

Presentation Length: 60 minutes (including Q\&A)

Format: Interactive sessions, case studies, research presentations, or applied workshops

Priority Topics & Abstracts


1. Cognitive and Behavioral Science in Fireground Decision-Making

Abstract: Fireground operations demand rapid decisions under extreme stress and uncertainty. This session will explore how cognitive load, fatigue, and stress influence decision-making and situational awareness. Presenters will share research and practical strategies for improving judgment and reducing errors through training, simulation, and behavioral science applications.

2. Resilience and Mental Health in Firefighters

Abstract: Firefighters face cumulative trauma and high-risk exposures that impact mental health over time. This presentation will highlight evidence-based interventions for building resilience, promoting post-traumatic growth, and addressing burnout. Attendees will learn practical tools for fostering psychological well-being and sustaining long-term career health.

3. Leadership Psychology in Fire Service

Abstract: Effective leadership in high-stakes environments requires more than technical expertise—it demands psychological insight. This session will examine traits and behaviors that create psychologically safe teams, enhance trust, and improve performance. Presenters will discuss leadership models and actionable strategies for cultivating adaptive, resilient fire service organizations.

4. Human Factors and Error Management

Abstract: Human error remains a leading contributor to operational failures in emergency response. This session will delve into cognitive biases, stress-induced mistakes, and systemic vulnerabilities. Presenters will offer frameworks for error reduction, including training approaches and organizational practices that enhance reliability and safety.

5. Psychological Preparedness for Emerging Threats

Abstract: Climate-driven wildfires, mass casualty incidents, and evolving hazards require new levels of psychological readiness. This presentation will explore mental preparedness strategies for firefighters facing unprecedented challenges. Topics include resilience planning, adaptive coping mechanisms, and organizational approaches to support readiness in a rapidly changing risk landscape.
