Speaking about the unspeakable is crucial, I believe, to reconciling trauma and building resiliency. Preemptively telling our stories that may address our fears can help build trust among peers and the communities we serve.
My family history that included the murder of my paternal grandmother in 1934 and the suicide of my uncle in 1958 was not talked about as my siblings and I grew up. The impact of not being free to speak of the unspeakable horror my imagination conjured up has had a lasting impact on my private, personal, professional, and public relationships.
My working life is complete. My life’s work is just beginning.
