Where are the psychologists?
As a retired fire department battalion chief and a fire service member of the Fire Service Psychology Association, I’m deeply concerned about the efforts to develop national-level strategies for improving firefighter mental health services and reduce firefighter suicides without the guidance and direction of licensed psychologists. IMO, doing so is akin to a fire department developing patient care protocols without the guidance and direction of a licensed medical doctor.

Chief, I agree. The low level of MH professional involvement (Saturday Membership Meeting) is bad. My challenge to the MH profession is to address the question, “why” are suicide rates going up not down. What are we missing?
