Wanted: Help Develop Fire Psychology Guidelines for the Fire Service!
By: Robert Avsec, FSPA Operations Chief
The Cambridge Dictionary defines indoctrination as “the process of repeating an idea or belief to someone until they accept it without criticism or question.”
In the fire service, tradition is sacred—but when it comes to health, safety, and wellness, unquestioned beliefs can become barriers. It’s time to ask better questions.
How do culture, progress, and human potential intersect on the fireground? What assumptions are we still holding—and who gets to challenge them?
Psychologists study human behavior. Firefighters live it. Together, we can shape national strategies that honor both science and lived experience.
🔥 Coming Soon from the Fire Service Psychology Association (FSPA):
- Guidelines on Firefighter Behavioral Health Programs: Because every firefighter deserves care that understands their world—not just their symptoms.
- Guidelines on Psychological Evaluations for Firefighters
- Guidelines on Fireground Human Factors Analysis: Because integrating psychology into fire service strategy and tactics isn’t optional—it’s essential for improved safety, improved decision-making, sustainable member wellness, and operational excellence.
These won’t just be documents—they’ll be blueprints for change.
Want to help build them?
We’re forming Task Groups consisting of psychologists, fire service leaders, and masters-level clinicians to develop these guidelines. If you’re ready to contribute, email info@firepsychology.org with:
