SUMMARY:PTSD 911 Film - Live Screening
DESCRIPTION:Pre-Conference Event for 6th Annual Conference of FSPA (Not included in conference registration fee)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at the Atlantic Theater of Georgia Tech the day before before the FSPA Conference for a special screening of the PTSD 911 Movie! \n\n\n\nFirst Responders sign up to serve; they risk their lives and their mental health to respond to someone’s worst day. Who will rescue them? PTSD911 is a powerful new documentary film that tells this story from first hand accounts with first responders themselves. \n\n\n\nEmergency first responders are suffering from post-traumatic stress in record numbers\, but they are often afraid of losing their job if they ask for help; this must change. \n\n\n\nPTSD911 is a documentary film about real people: normal\, average human beings who have chosen to work in professions that require above average heroism\, fortitude\, and resolve. These men and women have jobs that require a willingness to face things that most of us can’t even imagine\, yet maintain a high level of dignity and professionalism. First responders in fact repeatedly see and experience things that most of us will never see\, causing compound issues related to post-traumatic stress injuries and disorders. \n\n\n\n\n“We expect them to show up when we call and take care of us when we’re at our worst!” \n– Conrad Weaver\n\n\n\nThey show up\, no matter what. Heroes\, yes! Yet they are human beings just like the rest of us with families\, husbands\, wives\,children\, brothers\, sisters\, and parents. They are firefighters\, police officers\, emergency medical technicians\, paramedics\, and 911 dispatchers. They are first responders. \n\n\n\nThere will also be an opportunity to meet film actors and book signing! \n\n\n\n*FSPA is not responsible for the film\, program and its content \n\n\n\nVIP RECEPTION Film Presentation and Panel Discussion: \n\n\n\nLocation: Cypress Theater (in the John Lewis Student Center @ of Georgia Tech) Time: 5:00-6:15 \n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the Trailer

SUMMARY:Firefighter Stress & Explosive Anger: The Impact on Marriage
DESCRIPTION:This webinar presentation is designed to review research on intimate partner aggression perpetration prevalence\, processes that predict for whom and under what circumstances IPA is most likely to occur and discuss best clinical practices for when it is ethical to. use couple therapy as a treatment mechanism. Specifically\, adaptations and cultural competence in delivering couple therapy and assessing for IPA risk among firefighter/paramedics will be covered. Finally\, legal documentation and reporting requirements as well as court cases and ethics for psychologists will be extensively discussed. The training will conclude with a firefighter/paramedic mock clinical case in which participants will elaborate on their goals for assessment\, clinical treatment plan formation\, documentation\, consultation\, and reporting strategies. This mock example will include dual role considerations as well as an ethical dilemma to provide more in-depth training and reflection.

SUMMARY:Impact of Mindfulness On Performance within High-Stress Occupations
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Summary: The literature is robust with information on mindfulness as a tool for resiliency and when used as an adjunct to research-based interventions. However\, emerging research is demonstrating the impact of mindfulness in performance within high-stress occupations. This presentation will review the research on how mindfulness impacts operational performance within high-stress occupations and the implications for fire service organizations.\nLearning Objectives:\n\n Describe at least two ways mindfulness can improve operational performance among firefighters\n\nThere is one APA Sponsored CE offered for this webinar. The Fire Service Psychology Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Fire Service Psychology Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.\nRegister \n

SUMMARY:Understanding Fire Service Culture: Continuing Education Class
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals interested in gaining the cultural competence necessary to be effective in working clinically with firefighter populations.\n\nFirefighters have a unique culture and are exposed to unique and cumulative trauma over the course of their careers. Few psychologists (and other mental health providers) understand the needs of this population. This course is designed to assist clinicians with gaining the cultural competency needed to be effective clinically working with this population.\n\nAfter completing this course\, the participant will:\n• Identify cultural components specific to the fire service including performance standards\, shift work\, and barriers to treatment.\n• Describe the complexities of firefighting including trauma exposure\, challenges to interpersonal relationships\, and organizational demands.\n• Explain current trends in peer support and psychological services offered to fire departments and barriers to treatment.\n• Identify psychological challenges most commonly recognized and researched in firefighter populations.\n• Explain the contributing factors to suicide among firefighters.\n\nThere will be 4 hours of continuing education awarded for successful completion.\n\nRegister Now:\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NtmOwb0wRpuMedcg3VubMw
